Corridor celebrates Big Chip Award win for myKE.Biz Project

June 2013

Corridor Manchester is celebrating a BIG CHIP award

Thanks to the collaboration between the Corridor Manchester partners, the project myKE has won the award for Best Public Sector project. The announcement was made at the awards dinner on 27 June 2013 at the Palace Hotel, Manchester.

myKE ‘my Knowledge Exchange’ is a social networking website (www.myke.biz) developed to help businesses innovate and grow through connecting with experts and sharing valuable resources and services. It was initially developed in response to a call for projects from JISC to address the barriers experienced by businesses in accessing expertise. The project team included Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Manchester, TRUSTECH and Manchester Science Parks.

“We are delighted to be recognised for the Big Chip Award for Best Public Sector Project. Corridor Manchester is home to a critical mass of knowledge economy organisations. Created by MMU’s Digital Labs for the Corridor Partnership, MyKE.biz was set up to help businesses source relevant expertise and facilities. The website is now ready to expand, to gather more and more content so that, in time, it can become an essential resource to help drive growth and innovation.” Claire Lowe, Partnership Manager, Corridor Manchester and Chair of the MyKE Steering Group.

Businesses may not always be aware of what expertise is available from organisations such as universities, the NHS, libraries or museums and these are often large and difficult to navigate. The myKE project developed the social networking platform, using co-creation workshops involving companies as part of the development journey.

“The DigitalLabs@MMU team really enjoyed developing myKE.Biz as it allowed us combine many of the strengths in digital across MMU. We are looking forward to continuing to work with members of Corridor Manchester to create a great site to showcase and share the expertise available" Darren Dancey, Director of DigitalLabs@MMU.

“I am delighted that myKE has won the Big Chip award. My Knowledge Exchange is a truly innovative project based on building a community of interest in innovation, initially to benefit Corridor Manchester based businesses. This is a superb project originally led by Mike Daw of the Knowledge Exchange office at MMU with software development by MMU Digital Labs, headed-up by Darren Dancey. It’s also been a great example of true collaboration across the Corridor Manchester partners. MyKE can be a source of real competitive advantage for Manchester businesses bringing greater access to the expertise available from each of the Corridor Manchester partners and other business contributors.” Mark Ratcliffe, Head of Knowledge Exchange, MMU.

The project was supported in its first year through the Jisc Business and Community Engagement Programme, and will now be continuing with support from Corridor Manchester, led by Manchester Science Park.

“Universities and colleges have a central role to play in leading local partnerships to enhance economic growth and social cohesion. But they are not traditionally configured to articulate or deliver such support in a form that can directly engage business. The Jisc Business and Community Engagement programme has funded a portfolio of university-led partnerships delivering innovative online platforms, which enable SMEs to access knowledge and expertise directly. MyKE is an outstanding exemplar of this work, harnessing innovative technologies and local collaborative capital both in its development and in its provision, for the benefit of businesses and the regional economy as a whole.” Simon Whittemore, Programme Manager, Business and Community Engagement, JISC.
